Eye stye on the upper lid

The upper eyelid contains glands that help keep the eye surface comfortable. When one becomes inflamed near a lash or its opening, the lid may feel heavy, sore, or hot to touch. Swelling can make the eye look smaller and may cause watering. Place a clean, warm—not hot—cloth over the closed upper lid for several minutes, repeating the routine through the day. Wash hands before and after, and use a separate cloth for each eye. Do not squeeze the bump or attempt to pierce it. Remove contact lenses and avoid eye makeup until the lid has recovered. Clean any crust gently from the lashes without rubbing the eye.
