Eye stye prevention: practical steps to reduce irritation

Short answer
You can reduce stye risk by keeping your hands, eyelids, cosmetics and contact lenses clean, and by avoiding rubbing or squeezing the eyelid.

How can you help prevent an eye stye?
You can reduce stye risk by keeping your hands, eyelids, cosmetics and contact lenses clean, and by avoiding rubbing or squeezing the eyelid. A stye, also called a hordeolum, is a tender, localised swelling near an eyelash or within an eyelid. It can develop when an eyelid gland or eyelash follicle becomes blocked and inflamed. Prevention lowers irritation and the transfer of germs, but it cannot prevent every stye.
What prevention involves
Eyelid hygiene is especially useful if you have had styes before or notice crusting around the lashes. Wash your hands before touching your eyes. Gently clean the eyelid edges with clean water and a fresh, clean cloth; do not scrub the eye or share face towels. Remove eye makeup before sleep, and replace old or contaminated products rather than applying them to an irritated eye. Avoid sharing mascara, eyeliner, brushes or eye drops.
If you wear contact lenses, wash and dry your hands before handling them, follow the recommended cleaning and replacement routine, and do not wear lenses when the eye is painful, red or producing discharge. Repeated styes can also occur alongside eyelid-margin inflammation or other skin conditions, so a clinician may look for an underlying eyelid problem if they keep returning.
What to do when a stye starts
Place a comfortably warm, clean compress over the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeating this during the day. The warmth may help loosen blocked eyelid material and ease discomfort. Use a clean section of cloth each time, and test the temperature on your skin first. Do not pop, pierce or squeeze the lump, because this can worsen inflammation or spread infection. Pause eye makeup and contact lenses until the eyelid has settled.
For pain, ask a pharmacist or clinician which option is suitable for you, particularly if you are pregnant, have another medical condition or take regular medicines. Do not use someone else’s prescription eye treatment or share your own.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a GP consultation if the swelling is not improving, keeps coming back, becomes very painful, or interferes with seeing. Seek prompt medical advice if redness or swelling spreads beyond the eyelid, the eye itself becomes very red, or you develop marked light sensitivity, fever, worsening discharge or changes in vision. Urgent assessment is needed for severe eye pain, sudden vision loss, injury involving the eye, or difficulty moving the eye.
A lump that persists or changes may not be a simple stye and should be examined. More information about associated symptoms is available in the guides to Red Eye and Eye Discharge.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your eyelid hygiene routine is appropriate, whether contact lenses or cosmetics could be contributing, and whether recurring styes suggest eyelid-margin inflammation or another condition. You can also ask how long to continue warm compresses and which symptoms should prompt a same-day review.

Questions people ask
Can makeup cause a stye?
Old, shared or contaminated eye makeup can transfer germs and irritate the eyelid. Remove makeup before sleep, do not share products, and replace products that touched an infected or inflamed eye.
Should I wear contact lenses with a stye?
Avoid contact lenses while the eyelid or eye is painful, red or producing discharge. Follow advice from a clinician or optometrist before restarting them, and use clean hands whenever handling lenses.
Why do my styes keep returning?
Recurring styes can be linked with blocked eyelid glands or inflammation at the eyelid margin. A GP or eye-care professional can examine the eyelids and suggest a tailored hygiene routine.
