What should you know about eye stye pregnancy?

A stye is a tender, localised inflammation near an eyelash or eyelid oil gland. Pregnancy does not make every eyelid lump a stye, so its position, tenderness, and appearance matter. It is not a reason to stop prescribed treatment or assume the pregnancy is being harmed. Avoid rubbing the eye, sharing towels, and using old eye products, which can introduce more germs.

Wash your hands before touching the eyelid. Hold a clean warm cloth over the closed eye for several minutes, repeating the routine through the day. Remove any drainage gently with clean water. Do not pierce or squeeze the lump. Before using antibiotic drops, ointment, pain medicine, or an over-the-counter eye product, ask your maternity team, pharmacist, or GP to check that it is appropriate for you and your stage of pregnancy. Stop contact lenses and eye makeup until recovery.

Contact a clinician if the lump is worsening, recurrent, or not settling with gentle care. Get prompt help for fever, severe pain, vision changes, pain with eye movement, rapidly spreading redness, or swelling that makes the eye difficult to open.
