Eye stye pain: relief and warning signs

A stye may feel sore when you blink or touch the lid, with a local red lump, watering, or a gritty sensation. Pressure from swelling can make the eyelid feel heavy. Pain limited to the lid is different from deep eye pain, and pain with eye movement or a change in vision needs more urgent attention.

Hold a clean, comfortably warm compress over the closed eyelid for several minutes, repeating it during the day. Keep your hands and eyelids clean, and resist rubbing, pressing, or popping the lump. Avoid makeup and contact lenses until the pain and swelling have settled.

Seek prompt medical advice if pain is worsening, swelling spreads beyond the lid, the eye cannot open normally, or vision is blurred. Seek urgent help for severe eye pain with reduced vision, double vision, or pain when moving the eye. Persistent pain or a firm lump also warrants an examination.
