Is an eye stye contagious?

A stye begins in a blocked, inflamed lash follicle or eyelid gland. The bump itself is not something that normally moves from one person to another through ordinary contact. Transfer is possible when someone touches the sore lid and then another person’s eye, or when towels, pillowcases, washcloths, cosmetics, or eye tools are shared. A stye may also develop from a person’s own skin bacteria and gland blockage, so its presence does not prove that another person caused it.

Wash hands before and after touching the eyelid, use a separate clean towel, and avoid sharing bedding that touches the face until it has been washed. Do not share eye makeup or applicators, and pause makeup and contact lenses while the eye is irritated. Keep the area clean without scrubbing, and do not squeeze the bump. These steps protect the other eye as well as people around you.

Arrange a GP Consultation if several household members develop eye symptoms, the eyelid swelling spreads, or the bump repeatedly returns. Seek prompt care for fever, severe pain, reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, or redness extending around the eye. New Eye Discharge or widespread Red Eye may need a different assessment, particularly if symptoms affect both eyes.

Ask whether the appearance fits a stye or another eye condition, how long to keep using hygiene measures, and when it is sensible to return to lenses or makeup. Mention shared household symptoms, discharge, fever, and any vision change.
