Eye stye causes and treatment

A stye is an inflamed eyelid gland or lash follicle, often producing a sore red bump at the lid margin. Blocked oil, flakes, or other debris can trap material in the gland. Skin bacteria can add inflammation, but a stye is not the same as an infection affecting the entire eye. Recurrent bumps can be associated with ongoing eyelid irritation or gland blockage. A doctor examines the lid when the appearance is unusual, the problem repeatedly returns, or another condition needs to be excluded.

Hold a clean warm compress against the closed eyelid for several minutes, several times during the day. Wash hands first, clean away crust gently, and never pierce or squeeze the lump. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup while symptoms are active, and replace eye cosmetics that may have touched the irritated area. If home measures are insufficient, a clinician may recommend an ointment or other treatment after examining you; do not use someone else’s eye medicine.

Book a GP Consultation if the lump is not settling, grows, recurs, or makes it difficult to open the eye. Get urgent assessment for reduced vision, severe eye pain, strong light sensitivity, fever, or redness and swelling spreading around the eye. Eye Discharge or widespread Red Eye can point to a different problem and should be described during assessment.

Ask whether the bump is a stye, how often to use compresses, whether you should stop lenses or makeup, and what change would mean treatment needs review. Tell the clinician about allergies, medicines, recurrent eyelid swelling, discharge, and any change in vision.
