Stringy eye discharge: what to know

Short answer

Stringy eye discharge often reflects mucus from irritation or allergy, but infection and other eye problems can also cause discharge.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible explanations

Clear or white, stretchy mucus with itching, watering, and symptoms in both eyes often fits allergic conjunctivitis or surface irritation. Sticky yellow or green material, eyelid crusting, redness, and discomfort can occur with conjunctivitis. Dryness may also encourage the eye to produce thicker strands of mucus, especially after screen use or in air-conditioned rooms. Discharge alone cannot tell whether the cause is allergic, infectious, or mechanical. Contact-lens wear, recent eye treatment, and one-sided symptoms are useful details for a clinician.

Practical care

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye, gently clean discharge with clean water and a fresh pad, and avoid rubbing. Do not share towels, cosmetics, or eye drops. Pause contact lenses and eye makeup until symptoms have settled and a clinician says they are suitable again. A cool clean compress may ease itch or irritation. Avoid using leftover antibiotic or steroid drops; the wrong drop can worsen some problems or hide their progression. Arrange an assessment if discharge persists, returns, or affects vision.

When to seek care

Seek urgent eye care for severe pain, reduced or blurred vision that does not clear, marked light sensitivity, a very red eye, swelling around the eye, or an injury or chemical splash. Contact-lens users should seek prompt advice for pain, redness, or vision change because corneal infection needs timely attention.

Questions for your doctor

Does the discharge look more allergic, infectious, or related to dryness? Should I stop lenses or use a particular cleanser or drop? How can I reduce spread if infection is suspected?
