What should you know about eye sensitivity and headache?

Bright light may feel painful when the eye surface is irritated, when the nervous system is sensitised during a migraine, or when a viral illness causes headache and fatigue. Congestion, facial pressure, or nasal symptoms can occur with Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis, or a Common Cold. Fever and body aches can accompany infections such as COVID-19 or Dengue Fever. Heat, sweating, and too little fluid can contribute to Dehydration or Heat Exhaustion. Stress and rapid breathing may intensify headache and light discomfort in Generalised Anxiety Disorder. The pattern, associated symptoms, and speed of onset help a clinician separate these possibilities.

Rest in a quiet, dim room and reduce screen brightness without staring at a dark screen for long periods. Drink fluids if you can do so safely, move away from heat, and eat a light meal if you have not eaten. A cool cloth over closed eyes may feel soothing. Follow the label for any usual pain medicine and avoid taking more than directed. Record triggers, duration, fever, nasal symptoms, nausea, and whether movement worsens the pain.

Get urgent help for a sudden explosive headache, new confusion, fainting, weakness, trouble speaking, seizure, persistent vomiting, or a stiff neck with fever. Seek prompt assessment for new vision loss, a painful red eye, severe eye pain, or headache after head injury. Fever with a rapidly worsening headache also warrants immediate medical advice. Arrange a routine appointment when episodes recur, change pattern, or interfere with work, sleep, or daily activities.

Ask whether the pattern fits migraine, an eye problem, infection, heat illness, or another cause; which pain relief is appropriate; and whether an eye examination or other tests are needed. Bring a list of medicines and note recent travel, heat exposure, illness contacts, hydration, sleep, and screen use.
