What should you know about eye puffiness?

Short answer
Eye puffiness is often temporary, but sudden or one-sided swelling needs attention to its cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common pattern
- Temporary swelling may affect both eyes after irritation or fluid retention.
- Avoid
- Rubbing, new cosmetics, and unprescribed creams near the eye.
What eye puffiness can mean
The delicate skin around the eyes can hold extra fluid after sleep, crying, salty meals, rubbing, or exposure to an irritant. Seasonal allergy may cause itch, watering, and puffiness on both sides. A tender, warm, increasingly red eyelid is different and may point to infection. Angioedema can cause rapid swelling around the eyes, sometimes with raised itchy areas elsewhere; hives may accompany it. Puffiness alone does not identify one diagnosis, so timing, triggers, pain, discharge, and changes in vision matter.
What you can do now
Do not rub or press the eyelids. A cool, clean compress can soothe irritation, while keeping your head slightly raised during rest may reduce morning fluid collection. Pause new eye creams, makeup, contact lenses, or fragranced products until the skin settles. Keep the area clean and avoid putting unprescribed creams close to the eye. Note whether symptoms follow a product, food, bite, or outdoor exposure. A clinician can choose treatment based on the pattern rather than treating every swollen eyelid the same way.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for swelling with trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, severe pain, fever, pain when moving the eye, marked redness, or vision change. Arrange prompt assessment if one eyelid becomes hot and tender, swelling keeps worsening, or the eye cannot open normally. If puffiness repeatedly returns or does not improve after removing a suspected trigger, book a dermatology or primary-care review.
Questions for your doctor
Could an allergy, irritant, infection, or another eyelid problem explain the pattern? Which products should I stop, and what is safe to use near the eye? What symptoms would mean I should seek urgent care if the swelling returns?

Questions people ask
Can lack of sleep cause eye puffiness?
Short sleep can make morning fluid retention more noticeable, although persistent swelling has other possible causes.
Is eye puffiness always an allergy?
No. Irritation, rubbing, fluid retention, and infection can also produce puffiness; itch and watering make allergy more suggestive.
