Short answer

Eye pressure with a headache is often related to eye strain, congestion, dehydration, or a primary headache disorder, but sudden pain or vision changes need prompt assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pressure feeling
Does not by itself show that pressure inside the eye is raised
Common triggers
Close-up work, glare, congestion, missed fluids, poor sleep, and illness
Urgent warning
Severe eye pain with vision change, redness, halos, nausea, or vomiting

The short answer

Eye pressure with a headache is often related to eye strain, congestion, dehydration, or a primary headache disorder, but sudden pain or vision changes need prompt assessment. The feeling of pressure does not measure the pressure inside the eye. A clinician may need to check your vision and examine the eye to identify the cause.

What the pressure may mean

Long periods of reading, screen use, glare, or an outdated glasses prescription can tire the focusing muscles and cause aching around the eyes, forehead discomfort, blurred focus, or dryness. Blocked nasal passages can create fullness over the cheeks, brow, and eyes; this can occur with Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis, or a Common Cold. Headache can also accompany a migraine, tension-type headache, poor sleep, or Generalised Anxiety Disorder. Heat, sweating, vomiting, or not drinking enough fluid may point toward Dehydration or Heat Exhaustion. Fever and body aches can occur with infections such as COVID-19 or Dengue Fever, so the wider pattern matters.

Eye strain usually improves when the eyes rest, while persistent or one-sided symptoms deserve a clinical review. The sensation alone cannot distinguish a surface problem, sinus congestion, migraine, or a raised-pressure eye condition.

What you can do now

Pause close-up work regularly, reduce glare, blink deliberately, and use prescribed glasses or contact lenses as directed. A cool, clean compress over closed eyelids may ease surface discomfort. Drink fluids if you may be dehydrated, rest somewhere cool, and avoid driving if your vision is blurred. Saline nasal rinsing can help some people with congestion when performed with sterile or appropriately prepared water. Do not use someone else’s eye drops or leftover antibiotic or steroid drops.

Arrange an appointment if the pressure keeps returning, lasts beyond a short period of rest, affects one eye, or comes with recurring headaches. An eye examination can check vision, the eye surface, and internal eye pressure when appropriate.

When to seek care urgently

Seek urgent medical care for sudden severe eye pain or headache, a red eye with blurred vision, halos around lights, marked light sensitivity, nausea or vomiting, a new unequal pupil, or rapid loss of vision. These features can signal an eye emergency and should not be explained away as screen strain. Get emergency help for weakness, facial drooping, confusion, fainting, trouble speaking, or a sudden thunderclap headache.

Contact a clinician promptly for eye pain after an injury or chemical exposure, fever with a swollen eyelid, worsening headache with repeated vomiting, or symptoms in a person with a weakened immune system. For a chemical splash, rinse the eye continuously with clean running water while arranging urgent help.

Questions for your doctor or optometrist

Ask what should be examined: the eye surface, vision, internal eye pressure, or the sinuses. Tell them when the sensation began, whether it is in one or both eyes, what screen use or movement does to it, and whether you have redness, discharge, congestion, fever, nausea, light sensitivity, or visual changes. Bring details of any glasses, contact lenses, eye drops, pain medicines, recent illness, injury, or chemical exposure.

Questions people ask

Can screen use cause pressure around the eyes?

Yes. Prolonged close-up focus, glare, dryness, and an uncorrected vision problem can cause aching around the eyes and forehead. Rest your eyes and arrange an eye check if it keeps recurring or your vision changes.

Does eye pressure headache mean glaucoma?

No. The feeling can have several explanations, and it cannot diagnose glaucoma. Sudden severe eye pain, a red eye, blurred vision, halos, nausea, or vomiting needs urgent assessment.

Should I use eye drops for this headache?

Avoid borrowing drops or using leftover prescription drops. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a suitable lubricating drop is appropriate, especially if you wear contact lenses or have eye redness.
