Eye mucus discharge: what to know

A small amount of pale mucus at the inner corner after sleep can be part of normal tear and surface debris. More noticeable strings or sticky material may occur with dryness, dust, eyelid irritation, or allergy. Allergic conjunctivitis often causes itching and watering, while conjunctivitis may bring redness, gritty discomfort, and discharge that returns during the day. Thick discharge that seals the lashes is more concerning when paired with pain, swelling, or reduced vision. The appearance alone cannot establish the cause, especially in children or contact-lens wearers.

Wash your hands, then soften crusts with clean lukewarm water. Wipe from the inner corner outward using a fresh pad for each eye and each pass. Do not share towels, pillows, cosmetics, or eye drops, and wash pillowcases if discharge is recurring. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup while the eye is irritated. Do not pull mucus from the eye with unwashed fingers or use old prescription drops. If itching dominates, reduce exposure to likely allergens and ask a pharmacist about appropriate relief.

Get prompt medical help for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, significant swelling, injury, or a very red eye. Contact-lens wearers with mucus plus pain or visual change need urgent assessment. Seek advice if discharge keeps returning, symptoms worsen, or you feel feverish or unwell. Swelling spreading around the eye is also a reason for urgent review.
