Eye headache: what should you know?

The discomfort may sit behind one eye, above the brow, or across the forehead. Long periods of close focus, glare, an outdated vision prescription, poor sleep, or tension in the face and neck can contribute. A blocked or inflamed nose can create pressure near the eyes; this pattern may occur with allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, or a common cold. Dehydration and heat exhaustion can also bring headache with thirst, weakness, dizziness, or heavy sweating. Some viral illnesses, including COVID-19 or dengue fever, can include headache alongside other whole-body symptoms.

Rest your eyes by looking away from close work regularly, reduce glare, and use comfortable lighting. Drink fluids, eat if you have missed meals, and rest in a cool, quiet place. A cool cloth over closed eyelids may ease pressure. Do not press or rub the eye. If you use contact lenses, remove them until the discomfort settles. Keep a brief record of timing, triggers, location, and accompanying symptoms so an appointment can focus on the pattern.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a new or persistent headache around the eye, especially if vision changes, eye redness, swelling, fever, vomiting, or marked light sensitivity accompany it. Seek emergency help for sudden severe pain, sudden loss of vision, weakness, confusion, fainting, or trouble speaking. After an eye injury or chemical splash, treat it as urgent and follow local emergency advice rather than waiting for home measures to work.
