What should you know about eye folliculitis treatment?

Folliculitis is inflammation around a hair follicle and can cause small red bumps, tenderness, itching, or pus. Around the eyebrow or eyelid margin, a similar-looking bump may instead be an ingrown hair, a blocked gland, acne-like inflammation, or irritation from cosmetics or hair removal. The exact location matters.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or pluck a painful bump beside the eye. Scratching and sharing towels, makeup, or tools can worsen irritation or spread infection. A clinician may inspect the area and decide whether a swab, topical medicine, or another approach is needed.

Pause eye makeup and fragranced products on the affected skin, wash hands before touching the area, and use a clean warm compress if it feels soothing. Keep razors and tweezers away from the bump until the skin settles. Do not put skin antibiotics or leftover eye medicine into or near the eye without medical instructions.

If a bacterial infection is suspected, a clinician may prescribe topical antibiotic therapy or antibiotics for a skin infection. Use the prescribed treatment exactly as directed and complete the advised course unless the prescriber changes it.

Seek urgent medical care for vision change, pain with eye movement, severe eye pain, rapidly spreading redness or swelling, fever, marked light sensitivity, or difficulty opening the eye. Arrange a prompt review for recurrent bumps, drainage, a spreading rash, or no improvement with basic care.
