What should you know about yellow eye discharge?

Discharge is made from tears, mucus, oils, shed cells, and inflammatory material. A small amount after sleep can be harmless, especially when the eye has been dry or exposed to dust. Thicker yellow or green material, eyelids sticking together, and redness can occur with conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis may be infectious or linked to allergy and irritation; the discharge pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

Allergic irritation more often brings itching and watery eyes, while infection may bring increasing redness and crusting. Contact lens wear can make eye symptoms more concerning because the cornea can become infected.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Use clean cotton or a fresh damp cloth to soften and wipe away discharge, moving from the inner corner outward; use a new part of the cloth for each wipe and do not share towels. Avoid rubbing, eye makeup, and contact lenses until the eye is comfortable and clear.

Do not use another person’s drops or leftover antibiotics. Lubricating drops may ease irritation, but a pharmacist or clinician can help choose a suitable product. Keep spectacles clean and wash pillowcases if several people at home have eye symptoms.

Arrange medical advice promptly if discharge is persistent, returns repeatedly, or occurs with marked redness. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, swelling around the eye, an injury, or a chemical splash. Contact lens users should remove the lenses and seek prompt clinical advice, particularly when pain or vision change is present.
