What should you know about eye discharge when i wake up?

Tears, mucus, skin oils, and small particles can collect at the eyelid edges during sleep, leaving a little crust when you wake. More discharge than usual, repeated eyelid sticking, itching, redness, or watering may point to irritation, allergy, or inflammation. Allergic Conjunctivitis often causes itching and may be linked with environmental triggers. Conjunctivitis can produce discharge throughout the day as well as after sleep. A blocked tear duct is another possibility, especially when watering is mainly on one side.

Wash your hands before touching your face. Place a clean warm compress over closed eyelids, then wipe softened material away with clean cotton. Do not share pillows, towels, cosmetics, or eye products. Avoid rubbing and pause contact lenses and eye makeup while discharge or irritation remains. Change pillowcases regularly if the eyes are repeatedly crusted. If symptoms follow pets, dust, smoke, or a new cosmetic, reduce exposure and mention the pattern during a consultation.

Seek prompt care for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, injury, or a foreign-body sensation. Contact lens wear with pain or worsening redness is urgent. Arrange assessment if discharge increases, persists through the day, keeps returning, or affects a newborn. Sudden loss of vision or severe trauma requires emergency help.

Ask whether the amount and timing suggest dryness, allergy, infection, or tear drainage trouble. Mention how long it has happened, whether both eyes are involved, and any contact lens use or vision change.
