Eye discharge and infection: what to know

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the surface covering the white of the eye and inner eyelids. Infection may cause redness, irritation, watering, and sticky discharge, while Allergic Conjunctivitis more often brings itching and watery eyes. Discharge alone cannot distinguish these causes. A clinician may need to examine the eye, especially when symptoms are strong, prolonged, or affecting sight.

Wash hands frequently, avoid rubbing, and clean discharge with a fresh damp cloth. Dispose of tissues after use and do not share towels, pillowcases, cosmetics, or eye drops. Stop contact lenses and eye makeup while the eye is red or discharging. Antibiotic treatment is not suitable for every cause, so do not self-treat with leftover medicine or someone else’s prescription.

Seek urgent care for severe eye pain, reduced or changed vision, intense light sensitivity, a chemical splash, an injury, or swelling around the eye with fever. Contact a clinician promptly if discharge is worsening, redness is spreading, the eye is difficult to open, or a contact-lens wearer has pain or redness. Prompt assessment helps protect the cornea and guide treatment.

Ask whether the cause appears infectious, allergic, or irritative; whether you should avoid work or school; and when lenses and cosmetics can be resumed.
