What Green Eye Discharge May Mean and What to Do

Discharge may collect during sleep or continue during the day. One or both eyes may be affected, and the eyelids can feel stuck together. Avoid diagnosing the cause from colour alone because irritation, allergy, and infection can overlap in appearance.

Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the clear surface covering the white of the eye and the inner eyelids. It can cause redness, watering, soreness, crusting, and discharge; some forms spread easily between people. Allergic conjunctivitis more often causes marked itching and watery discharge, although irritation can make the eyes feel sticky.

Other possibilities include irritation from smoke, dust, cosmetics, contact lenses, or a foreign particle. A clinician may need to examine the eye and ask about pain, vision changes, recent illness, allergies, and contact-lens use before advising treatment.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Gently wipe discharge away with clean cotton or a clean, damp cloth, moving from the inner corner outward; use a fresh part of the cloth for each wipe and do not share towels or pillows.

Do not rub the eye, use someone else’s eye drops, or restart an old prescription. Stop wearing contact lenses until the eye has recovered and a clinician has advised that lenses are safe again; discard lenses and cases as directed by an eye-care professional. Seek advice if symptoms persist, worsen, or keep returning.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for significant eye pain, sensitivity to light, blurred or reduced vision, pronounced swelling, injury, or a feeling that something is stuck in the eye. Contact-lens wearers should seek prompt advice for a red or painful eye because corneal problems can worsen quickly.

Seek urgent help if the eye is difficult to open, swelling is spreading around the eye, or you feel very unwell. Babies with eye discharge should be assessed by a healthcare professional. Until the cause is clearer, avoid sharing eye products and wash hands regularly.

Ask whether the pattern fits conjunctivitis or another eye problem, whether you should use any drops, and how long to avoid contact lenses. Mention when the discharge began, whether redness or itching is present, whether vision is affected, and whether anyone close to you has similar symptoms.
