Eye discharge during the day

Repeated discharge while awake may follow exposure to dust, smoke, dry air, cosmetics, or contact lenses. Itchy, watery symptoms can occur with Allergic Conjunctivitis. Sticky discharge with crusting or a gritty sensation can occur with Conjunctivitis. One-sided watering and material near the nose may involve tear drainage. The timing after screen use, outdoor exposure, cleaning products, or lens wear can reveal a trigger.

Notice whether wiping gives brief relief or whether material quickly returns. Also check if the eyelids are swollen, the eye feels painful, or vision changes. Those differences help separate surface irritation from problems needing prompt examination.

Wash your hands, then remove discharge gently with clean water and a fresh tissue or cloth. Dispose of tissues and wash reusable cloths. Take breaks from screens, blink often, and avoid direct airflow. Stop eye makeup and contact lenses while symptoms remain. Do not rub the eye or let dropper tips touch lashes or skin.

If symptoms follow a product or environment, avoid that suspected trigger and note what happens. Arrange clinical advice when the discharge keeps returning or interferes with normal activities.

Get urgent assessment for significant pain, blurred or reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, an injury, or a chemical splash. Fever, rapidly increasing swelling, pain with eye movement, or difficulty opening the eye also needs prompt help. A contact-lens wearer with pain and redness should be assessed promptly rather than continuing lens use.
