Eye discharge at night: what to know

Short answer
Eye discharge that gathers overnight can be harmless tear debris, but persistent or heavy material deserves attention to its associated symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Often less concerning
- A small amount of pale material that clears easily and does not recur
- Track
- Timing, colour, stickiness, itch, pain, redness, and vision
Why it may appear overnight
Blinking spreads tears and clears small particles while you are awake. During sleep, material can collect at the inner corners or along the lashes. A small amount that is pale and easy to remove may be part of this normal process. Thick, repeated discharge with redness or lids stuck together can occur with Conjunctivitis. Itching and watery eyes point more toward Allergic Conjunctivitis, while burning may follow dry air, smoke, or a product used before bed.
Ask whether symptoms are present on waking only or continue through the day. Note if one eye started first, whether anyone close to you has similar symptoms, and if a new pillow product, cream, or eye drop preceded the change.
What you can try tonight
Before bed, remove eye makeup and wash your hands. In the morning, soften stuck crusts with a clean lukewarm cloth rather than pulling the lashes apart. Use a separate cloth for each eye and wash it after use. Keep fans or air vents from blowing directly at your face, and avoid rubbing. Do not wear contact lenses or eye makeup while discharge, redness, or irritation continues.
If the pattern repeats, record the colour, texture, timing, and any itch or pain. This short record can make an appointment more useful.
Signs that need medical review
Arrange prompt assessment for increasing discharge, significant redness, eye pain, light sensitivity, or vision changes. Seek urgent help after a chemical splash or injury, or if swelling spreads around the eye, fever appears, or moving the eye hurts. Contact-lens wearers should not wait with a painful red eye because the cornea may need checking.
Useful questions
Does the overnight timing suggest dryness, allergy, infection, or an eyelid issue? Is my cleaning method suitable? When may I return to lenses or makeup, and what symptom should make me seek urgent care?

Questions people ask
Why are my eyelids stuck together in the morning?
Dried tears or discharge can bind the lashes. Persistent sticking, redness, or thick material may need assessment for conjunctivitis.
Should I wake up to clean eye discharge?
Usually, gentle cleaning when you wake is enough. Seek advice if discharge is heavy, painful, or accompanied by vision changes.
