Eye discharge and sore throat: what to know

A viral respiratory illness can inflame the throat and cause watery eyes, nasal symptoms, or conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis may present with discharge and can occur around the same time as cold-like symptoms. Allergic conjunctivitis is more closely associated with itching, watering, sneezing, or an itchy throat than with a typical painful throat. The appearance of the discharge, fever, cough, swollen glands, eye redness, and whether symptoms affect one or both eyes help a clinician assess the pattern. These symptoms alone cannot identify the exact cause.

Wash hands often, cover coughs and sneezes, and avoid sharing towels, bedding, cosmetics, or eye drops. Clean eye discharge gently with a fresh damp cloth, using a separate section for each eye. Drink fluids and choose soothing throat measures that are safe for you. Avoid rubbing the eyes, smoke, and contact lenses while irritation or discharge continues. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using medicated eye or throat products, particularly for a child or if you take regular medicines.

Obtain urgent eye care for severe eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, injury, or chemical exposure. Seek urgent general medical help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, or rapidly worsening illness. Contact-lens wearers with eye discharge should seek prompt advice and keep lenses out. Arrange a review if symptoms persist, recur, or become more intense.
