Eye discharge after lash extensions

Fumes, tape, glue or particles introduced during application can irritate the eye surface. This may cause watering, burning, redness and a gritty feeling soon afterwards. An allergic reaction can bring itching, puffy lids and watery or stringy discharge, sometimes after a delay. Conjunctivitis can also cause sticky discharge and redness, and may spread through hand-to-eye contact.

Discharge does not show which cause is responsible by itself. A clinician may need to examine the eye, particularly if symptoms are worsening, one eye is much more painful, or vision is affected. Do not pull extensions off at home if doing so could damage the lashes or eye.

Wash your hands and gently clean the lids with lukewarm water; do not scrub the lash line. Stop eye makeup and contact lenses until symptoms settle and a clinician advises that lenses are safe. Avoid reapplying extensions or using adhesive, remover or leftover eye drops while the eye is irritated.

Use a cool clean compress for puffy lids. A pharmacist or clinician can advise about suitable lubricating or allergy treatment. If removal is needed, have it performed safely by a qualified professional or follow an eye clinician’s advice rather than tugging the extensions.

Seek urgent care for severe pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, an injury, chemical exposure or difficulty opening the eye. Contact lens wearers with pain or discharge should be assessed promptly. Emergency help is needed if breathing difficulty or swelling of the face accompanies the eye symptoms.

Arrange a review when discharge persists, redness spreads, symptoms recur after each application, or the eye is not improving with gentle care. Take the product details and application timing to the appointment if available.

Ask whether this is irritation, allergic conjunctivitis or Conjunctivitis, and whether the extensions should be removed. Tell the clinician when the extensions were applied, the products used, which eye is affected, whether itching or pain is present, and whether vision or light tolerance has changed.
