What should you know about eye dandruff treatment?

Fine flakes at the brows, hairline, or lashes can occur when dandruff affects adjacent skin. Seborrheic dermatitis may also cause redness, itch, or greasy scale in areas rich in oil glands. Dryness, contact irritation, or another eyelid condition can look similar. The eye itself should not be assumed to have dandruff simply because the surrounding skin is flaky.

Wash the face with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Keep flakes from accumulating along the lashes with a clean, damp compress. A clinician may recommend treating scalp or facial dandruff with a suitable regimen such as medicated shampoo therapy or topical antifungal treatment, while keeping those products away from the eye surface. Do not scratch, peel scale, or use steroid, antifungal, or cosmetic products on the eyelids without specific instructions.

Arrange a dermatology or eye assessment if flaking persists, returns often, spreads onto the eyelids, or is accompanied by marked redness, swelling, crusting, or lash loss. Seek urgent eye care for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred vision, chemical exposure, or swelling that interferes with opening the eye.
