What should you know about extremely dry cracked feet?

Short answer
Extremely dry cracked feet need regular moisturising and protection from friction, while deep, painful, or infected cracks should be assessed by a clinician.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Helpful habit
- Moisturise soon after washing and whenever skin feels tight
- Avoid
- Cutting cracks, harsh scrubbing, and fragranced products
Why feet crack
The soles carry pressure and may develop a thick layer of hard skin. When that skin loses moisture, it becomes less flexible and can split around the heels, toes, or edges of the feet. Long hot showers, harsh cleansers, dry air, open-backed footwear, and repeated friction can make fissures worse.
Scaling between the toes, itching, burning, or an odour can point toward Athlete's Foot rather than simple dryness. A clinician may also consider eczema, psoriasis, or other causes when the problem is widespread or keeps returning.
A practical care routine
Wash with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, then pat dry, including between the toes. Within a few minutes, apply a thick fragrance-free emollient to the dry areas and repeat regularly. Socks and closed, comfortable shoes can reduce rubbing and help retain moisture. Do not apply heavy ointment between the toes if that area is damp.
A foot file can gently smooth softened hard skin, but stop if it causes tenderness or bleeding. Never cut fissures or use strong acid products on open cracks. Emollient therapy may be recommended when ordinary moisturiser is not enough.
When to seek care
Seek medical advice for bleeding, increasing pain, warmth, swelling, pus, spreading redness, fever, or difficulty walking. Arrange a review when cracks are deep, recur despite careful moisturising, or occur with significant itch and scaling. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation should seek advice early for any foot break in the skin.
Questions for your doctor
Are these fissures caused by dryness, Athlete's Foot, eczema, or another condition? Which emollient texture and application schedule suit me? Should I avoid filing, and how should an open crack be protected?

Questions people ask
Should I moisturise between my toes?
Keep between the toes clean and dry; place thick emollient mainly on dry soles and heels unless a clinician advises otherwise.
Can cracked feet heal without treatment?
Mild dryness may settle with consistent protection, but deep or recurring fissures often need targeted care and a check for an underlying condition.
