Short answer

Extremely dark yellow urine is often concentrated because you have not had enough fluid, but persistent colour change or other symptoms needs medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common clue
Urine may lighten after adequate fluids and rest.
More concerning change
Brown or tea-coloured urine, especially with jaundice or abdominal symptoms.
Urgent warning
Confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, or very little urine.

The short answer

Urine can look deeper yellow after sweating, exercise, vomiting, diarrhoea, or several hours without drinking. The first urine after waking is also commonly darker. Some vitamin supplements and medicines can change urine to a bright or deep yellow without indicating illness.

What the colour may mean

Notice whether the urine becomes lighter after drinking fluids and resting in a cool place. Dark yellow urine together with thirst, a dry mouth, headache, dizziness, or passing urine less often can fit with dehydration. Heat exposure and heavy sweating can increase this risk; weakness, nausea, headache, or faintness after heat exposure can also occur with heat exhaustion.

A brown, tea-coloured, or orange appearance is different from ordinary concentrated yellow urine. Yellowing of the eyes or skin, pale stools, itching, abdominal pain, fever, or marked tiredness should be assessed because liver or bile-flow problems can affect urine colour. Dark urine can also have other causes, so colour alone cannot identify the cause.

What to do now

Sip water regularly and use your thirst and urine colour as practical guides, unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids. If you have been losing fluid through sweating, vomiting, or diarrhoea, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether an oral rehydration solution is suitable. Move away from heat and rest if you feel overheated.

Review any new supplements or medicines with a pharmacist rather than stopping a prescribed treatment yourself. Arrange a clinical review if the urine stays unusually dark despite normal drinking, keeps returning without an obvious reason, or comes with burning, urgency, pain, fever, or blood.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, or severe dizziness, especially after heat exposure or fluid loss. These signs can indicate significant dehydration or heat illness.

Get prompt medical advice for brown or tea-coloured urine, yellow eyes or skin, pale stools, severe abdominal pain, fever, or visible blood in the urine. A clinician may ask about fluids, heat exposure, supplements, medicines, and other symptoms, then decide whether urine or blood tests are needed.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could dehydration, a supplement, or a medicine explain this colour? Does the shade suggest concentrated urine or a different problem? Do I need urine or blood tests? What fluid plan is appropriate if I have vomiting, diarrhoea, kidney disease, heart disease, or another fluid restriction? Which symptoms should prompt urgent care?

Questions people ask

Can dehydration make urine extremely dark yellow?

Yes. When the body has less available fluid, urine becomes more concentrated and can look deep yellow. Thirst, dry mouth, dizziness, sweating, vomiting, or passing urine less often support dehydration as a possible explanation.

When is dark yellow urine more concerning?

Arrange prompt medical advice if it does not improve with normal drinking, keeps returning, or becomes brown or tea-coloured. Yellow eyes or skin, pale stools, abdominal pain, fever, blood, severe dizziness, confusion, or very little urine require urgent attention.

Can vitamins change urine colour?

Some vitamin supplements can make urine look unusually bright or deep yellow. Tell a pharmacist or clinician what you take, particularly if the colour change persists or you have other symptoms.
