What should you know about extremely cloudy urine?

Urine can look cloudy when it is concentrated after drinking less fluid, especially in hot weather or after sweating. White blood cells, bacteria, mucus or crystals can also change its appearance. A urinary tract infection may present with cloudy urine alongside burning, frequent urination, an urgent need to pass urine or lower abdominal discomfort. A kidney infection can present with cloudy urine and fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or feeling very unwell. Cloudiness without pain can still deserve assessment if it keeps returning.

If you otherwise feel well, drink fluids regularly and observe the next few urine samples. Do not use leftover antibiotics or take someone else’s medicine. Note the colour, smell, timing, pain, urinary frequency and any fever. Arrange a clinician review if the cloudiness persists, recurs, or comes with urinary symptoms; a urine test can help identify infection or other changes.

Seek prompt medical care for cloudy urine with fever, shaking chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, or difficulty passing urine. Blood in the urine, severe pain, or symptoms during pregnancy also warrant urgent advice. These features can indicate a problem needing treatment beyond simple hydration.

Ask whether you need a urine test, whether your symptoms fit a urinary tract infection, and which warning signs should bring you back. Mention recent illness, reduced fluid intake, new medicines, pregnancy, and any previous urinary or kidney problems.
