What should you know about extreme weakness and fatigue?

Short answer
Extreme weakness and fatigue can reflect illness, nutritional problems, dehydration or prolonged strain, and sudden or disabling symptoms need prompt assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What these symptoms can mean
Weakness means reduced muscle power; fatigue is a lack of energy that rest may not resolve. Causes range from poor sleep, infection and emotional strain to Anaemia, Coeliac Disease, Chronic Kidney Disease or Dehydration. Burnout can follow prolonged work or caregiving stress. Alcohol Use Disorder may affect sleep, nutrition and organ function. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is one possible explanation for persistent, activity-limiting exhaustion, but a clinician must first consider other causes. COVID-19 can also cause marked tiredness during or after infection.
What to do next
Arrange a GP assessment when symptoms are severe, persistent, worsening or affecting work, walking, eating or self-care. Keep a short record of sleep, meals, fluids, activity, mood, fever, breathlessness and medicines. Eat regular balanced meals and drink normally unless you have a fluid restriction. Pace demanding tasks, stand slowly, and ask for help with driving or safety-sensitive work. Do not start iron, stimulant products or detox regimens without advice, because the right treatment depends on the cause.
If symptoms limit ordinary tasks, arrange support with meals, bathing and transport. Record what you can and cannot do, because functional change is clinically useful information.
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency help for sudden one-sided weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion or inability to stay awake. Urgent assessment is also needed for severe dehydration, black or bloody stools, uncontrolled vomiting, rapidly worsening weakness or thoughts of self-harm. These warning signs need prompt evaluation rather than home monitoring.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which examinations or blood tests could identify anaemia, thyroid problems, infection, nutritional deficiency or kidney issues. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, whether rest helps, what activities worsen them, and whether you have weight change, bleeding, snoring, low mood, alcohol concerns, bowel symptoms or recent COVID-19.

Questions people ask
Is extreme fatigue just a sleep problem?
Not always. Sleep disruption is one contributor, but medical, nutritional, infectious and emotional causes also need consideration.
When should weakness be treated as an emergency?
Sudden weakness, especially on one side or with speech, breathing, chest or consciousness changes, needs emergency help.
