What should you know about extreme acid reflux?

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move back into the food pipe. Strong or repeated episodes can cause burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, regurgitation, upper abdominal discomfort, cough, throat irritation, or difficulty sleeping. A hiatus hernia, excess abdominal pressure, certain foods, medicines, and lying down soon after eating may contribute. Chest tightness is not automatically reflux: heart and lung problems can feel similar and must be considered.

Eat smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and avoid lying down soon after food. Notice whether rich meals, spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine, or late eating trigger symptoms. Raise the head end of the bed if night symptoms persist, and avoid tight clothing around the abdomen. A pharmacist or doctor can advise on an antacid, alginate, or acid-lowering medicine and how to use it. Review ongoing symptoms rather than repeatedly adding products without guidance.

Seek emergency help for chest pressure or tightness with sweating, breathlessness, nausea, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back. Arrange prompt medical assessment for food sticking, painful swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, or severe abdominal pain. A new or changing pattern should be checked even when reflux seems familiar.
