What should you know about extensive sigmoid diverticulosis?

The sigmoid colon is the curved lower section of the large bowel before the rectum. Diverticula are small pouches in its wall. They may be present without symptoms, while some people develop cramping, altered stools or abdominal pain. Diverticulosis alone does not mean the pouches are inflamed or infected.

A report may use extensive to describe how many pouches are visible or how widely they are distributed. It does not, on its own, predict how you will feel. Constipation and other bowel conditions can cause similar symptoms.

Use a GP Consultation to connect the report with your symptoms, examination and medical history. Note the location and timing of pain, stool consistency, bleeding, fever and changes in appetite. If fibre is suitable, increase it gradually with fluids rather than making a sudden large change.

Nutrition Counselling may help if bloating, food concerns or constipation make eating changes difficult. Follow any treatment plan for a flare and avoid taking unprescribed antibiotics.

Seek urgent assessment for severe or steadily worsening abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, a swollen or rigid abdomen, faintness or blood in the stool. Do not assume these signs are a routine effect of diverticulosis.
