What should you know about a liver function test?

Short answer

A liver function test is a blood test that checks substances linked with liver cells, bile flow and liver protein production.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the test can show

A liver panel may include enzymes released when liver cells are irritated, substances affected by bile flow, and proteins made by the liver. The pattern matters more than one result in isolation. An unusual value can follow infection, alcohol use, medicines, supplements, muscle injury or a problem affecting the liver or bile ducts. It does not identify one diagnosis by itself. Your clinician interprets the result alongside symptoms, examination findings, medical history and other tests. Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and Alcohol Use Disorder are among the conditions that may be considered in an appropriate clinical context.

Preparing and following up

Ask whether you need to fast and whether regular medicines or supplements should be taken before the blood draw; never stop a prescribed medicine without instructions. Bring an up-to-date list of medicines, herbal products and alcohol intake, because these details can change interpretation. Afterward, ask which results were outside the laboratory range, whether the pattern needs repeating, and whether imaging or another blood test is appropriate. A result outside a reference range is a prompt for context, not a diagnosis. More detail is available in Liver Function Test.

When to seek care

Contact a clinician promptly for yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, persistent vomiting, marked sleepiness, confusion, swelling of the abdomen, or significant right-sided upper abdominal pain. Seek emergency help for confusion, collapse, vomiting blood or severe bleeding. If you feel well but receive an unexpected result, arrange the recommended follow-up rather than trying to interpret a single number alone.

Questions for your doctor

Which parts of my panel are abnormal, and what pattern do they form? Could a medicine, supplement, infection or alcohol use affect the result? Do I need repeat testing, imaging or hepatitis assessment? What symptoms should prompt urgent review?

Questions people ask

Does an abnormal liver function test prove liver disease?

No. Results can change for several reasons, so a clinician considers the full pattern, history, symptoms and any follow-up tests.

Should I stop my medicines before testing?

Only if the clinician or testing service specifically tells you to; provide a complete medicine and supplement list instead.
