Expandable pedicle screw: what to know

An expandable pedicle screw is a spinal fixation implant that enlarges within bone to support stability when selected by a surgeon. It may be considered when bone quality or the planned correction makes additional fixation support useful. The screw is only one part of an operation; the overall plan may also involve decompression, bone grafting, or fusion.

Pedicles are short bridges of bone connecting the back part of a vertebra to its body. A screw passes through a pedicle and connects to rods or other hardware. An expandable design changes shape after placement to improve contact with surrounding bone. Imaging, bone strength, spinal alignment, nerve symptoms, and the number of levels involved all influence whether it is suitable. Hardware does not by itself treat every cause of back or leg pain.

Before surgery, review medicines that affect bleeding, smoking, bone health, diabetes, and any previous spine operations. Ask how the incision will be cared for, when walking and physiotherapy can begin, and which lifting or bending limits apply. Keep follow-up appointments so the team can assess wound healing, symptoms, alignment, and implant position. Recovery varies with the underlying problem and the extent of surgery.

Get urgent help for new loss of bladder or bowel control, rapidly worsening leg weakness, severe new numbness, inability to walk, chest pain, or breathing difficulty. Contact the team promptly for fever, wound drainage, increasing redness, wound opening, or pain that is escalating rather than settling.
