Short answer

Excessive sweating at night may come from your sleep environment, medicines, infection, hormone changes, or a sweating disorder.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What night sweating can mean

Notice whether your clothes or bedding become soaked despite a comfortable room, and whether the episodes are new or recurring. A clinician may review medicines and ask about fever, weight change, cough, palpitations, thirst, or disturbed sleep. Night sweating can occur with hyperthyroidism, hypoglycaemia, or obstructive sleep apnoea; the sweat itself does not identify one cause.

A warm room, heavy bedding, alcohol, spicy food, stress, or a recent illness can also raise body heat. A symptom diary can connect episodes with meals, medication timing, dreams, snoring, or daytime sweating.

What you can do now

Keep the room comfortably cool, choose breathable sleepwear, and use washable layers that can be changed easily. Replace fluids after a very sweaty episode, especially if your mouth is dry or urine is darker than usual. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice; ask whether sweating is a recognised effect or whether timing can be adjusted.

Arrange a routine appointment if episodes continue, interrupt sleep, or occur with daytime sweating. Treatment depends on the cause and may include addressing an illness or discussing options such as Botox For Sweating, Iontophoresis, or Microwave Sweat Gland Treatment when a sweating disorder is diagnosed.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for sweating with chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, confusion, a very high temperature, or signs of heat exhaustion. Contact a clinician promptly if night sweating is accompanied by persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, a new cough, or repeated low-blood-sugar symptoms.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which causes fit your pattern, whether medication or blood tests should be reviewed, and what details from your diary would help. If a sweating disorder is suspected, ask which body areas can be treated and how skin irritation or recurrence would be managed.

Questions people ask

Does night sweating always mean an illness?

No. Heat, bedding, substances, medicines, and short-lived illnesses can all contribute, although persistent or drenching episodes deserve assessment.

Can excessive sweating be treated?

Yes, treatment is chosen after considering the cause, affected areas, skin health, and whether the sweating occurs during the day as well.
