What should you know about Ethicon surgical sutures?

Ethicon is a manufacturer of surgical closure products. A suture may be absorbable, meaning the body gradually breaks it down, or non-absorbable, meaning it remains in place until it is removed or retained as planned. Sutures can also be monofilament or braided, and may be chosen for different handling, strength and tissue-support needs.

The thread is only one part of wound care. The clinician also considers the wound's depth, contamination, tension, location and the condition of the surrounding tissue. A brand name alone does not show which suture is appropriate for a particular person.

Follow the wound-care instructions given by the treating team. Keep the area protected as advised, avoid pulling or catching the thread, and wash your hands before touching the dressing or wound. Do not apply creams, antiseptics or home remedies unless recommended for that wound.

Keep any planned review or removal appointment. Absorbable sutures can still need assessment, and a small visible end may loosen as healing progresses. Protect the area from activities that stretch the wound until you are told it can bear normal strain.

Contact a healthcare professional if redness spreads, swelling increases, pain becomes more severe, the wound opens, or drainage develops. Fever, a bad smell or red streaking from the wound also needs prompt assessment. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe swelling, breathing difficulty or sudden widespread allergic symptoms.

Ask which suture material was used, whether it dissolves, how long the wound needs protection, and what changes should trigger a review. You can also ask when bathing, exercise and work activities are safe for your specific wound.
