ESR blood test: what the result can mean

ESR stands for erythrocyte sedimentation rate. In a laboratory tube, red blood cells settle at a measured pace. Inflammation can change blood proteins and make cells settle faster, but age, pregnancy, anaemia, kidney disease, infection, and other factors can also influence the result. ESR cannot identify the exact cause or location of inflammation, and a normal result does not exclude every inflammatory illness. The blood draw usually needs no special preparation unless other tests were ordered at the same time. Keep the appointment where the result will be explained rather than interpreting the number alone. Tell the clinician about fever, joint swelling, weight change, fatigue, recent infection, pregnancy, and regular medicines. Further tests may include a blood count, urine test, imaging, or a repeat measurement when the clinical picture is unclear.

ESR itself is not an emergency result. Seek prompt care for severe breathlessness, confusion, fainting, persistent high fever, rapidly worsening pain, or signs of serious infection. Contact your clinician if symptoms continue even when the ESR is reported as normal, or if an abnormal result was not followed by an explanation.

Ask what question the test was intended to answer, which other findings matter, whether repeat testing is useful, and what symptoms should prompt earlier review.
