Short answer

Erythrasma intertrigo is a superficial bacterial infection affecting warm, moist skin folds and needs targeted care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What erythrasma in a skin fold means

Erythrasma commonly appears where skin touches skin, such as the groin, underarms, beneath the breasts, or between toes. The affected area may look pink, red-brown, or darker than nearby skin, with a fairly clear edge and fine scaling. It can sting, itch, or produce an unpleasant odour, but some people notice little discomfort. Moisture, heat, friction, and tight clothing can help the bacteria persist. A fungal rash can look similar, so appearance alone may not confirm the cause.

What you can do

Arrange a clinical assessment if a fold rash is new, recurring, or not settling with gentle skin care. A clinician may examine the colour and scale and use a simple bedside test when the diagnosis is uncertain. Treatment may involve a prescribed antibacterial medicine applied to the skin; see [Topical Antibiotic Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-antibiotic-therapy/). Wash gently, pat the fold dry, change out of damp clothing, and choose breathable fabrics. Do not scrub, scratch, or apply steroid or antifungal products repeatedly without advice.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical care if the area becomes rapidly more painful, hot, swollen, or tender, or if pus, fever, red streaking, or feeling unwell develops. Arrange a review when the rash spreads, keeps returning, cracks, or fails to improve after the recommended treatment. Odour can accompany a fold infection; persistent changes can also be discussed through [Body Odour](/symptoms/body-odour/).

Questions for your doctor

Could this be erythrasma rather than fungal intertrigo? Which product should I use, where should it be applied, and for how long? How can I keep the fold dry without irritating it? What should I do if the rash returns?

Questions people ask

Is erythrasma the same as intertrigo?

Intertrigo describes irritation in a skin fold; erythrasma is a bacterial infection that can occur in that setting and resemble other fold rashes.

Can erythrasma spread to other people?

It is not usually treated as a highly contagious rash, but personal towels and clothing should not be shared while the area is active.
