What should you know about erythrasma foot?

Short answer
Erythrasma on the foot often affects moist areas between the toes and needs assessment because it can resemble athlete’s foot or irritation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Erythrasma on a foot
On the foot, erythrasma commonly appears as a reddish-brown patch or fine scale in a warm, damp toe web. It may itch, sting, crack, or have an odour, although some people notice little discomfort. Athlete’s foot is a common look-alike and can occur at the same time, so a clinician may examine the skin closely or use a simple test. Sweat, enclosed shoes, and socks that stay damp create conditions in which surface bacteria can multiply.
Foot care while it heals
Wash gently, dry between every toe, and rotate breathable footwear so shoes can air out. Change socks when they become damp and avoid picking at cracks. Use only the medicine recommended for the diagnosis; an antifungal product alone may not address a bacterial rash. A clinician may prescribe topical antibacterial treatment and review any coexisting fungal infection. See Topical Antibiotic Therapy for more information.
When to seek care
Arrange an examination for a foot rash that persists, spreads, repeatedly returns, or leaves painful cracks. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, severe pain, fever, or redness moving beyond the original area. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation should seek advice early for new breaks in foot skin, since small wounds can need careful management.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the rash is bacterial, fungal, or both; how to apply treatment between the toes; and how to clean or dry footwear. Ask when cracked skin needs a separate review.

Questions people ask
Is erythrasma on the foot the same as athlete’s foot?
No. They can look similar, but erythrasma is bacterial while athlete’s foot is fungal; both may occur together.
Why does foot moisture matter?
Persistent dampness softens the skin and supports surface bacterial overgrowth, especially in enclosed shoes.
