What should you know about equine COPD?

COPD can involve ongoing airway irritation and damage that limits airflow. People may notice cough, wheezing, chest tightness, or phlegm. Symptoms can vary from day to day and may worsen during a chest infection or after exposure to smoke, dust, or fumes. A cough is a common presentation of COPD, but a cough alone does not establish the diagnosis.

Treatment may include inhaled medicines, activity planning, and support to stop smoking if relevant. Follow-up helps check symptoms and adjust the plan.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or difficulty speaking in full sentences. Prompt medical review is also sensible when phlegm changes markedly, fever accompanies breathing symptoms, or usual relief measures stop helping.
