Epidermoid cysts removal

Epidermoid cysts are sacs beneath the skin that contain keratin. A clinician may discuss removal when a cyst repeatedly swells, catches on clothing, interferes with daily activities, or remains a concern after assessment. A quiet cyst can sometimes be watched instead.

The skin may be tender and red during inflammation. At that stage, the priority may be to settle the flare or treat an abscess. The clinician also checks that the lump fits the expected pattern rather than assuming every skin bump is an epidermoid cyst.

Do not squeeze, lance, or scrape the cyst. Keep the area clean and avoid friction while arranging an appointment. Arrange prompt care if a cyst becomes more painful, warm, red, swollen, or begins draining. Urgent evaluation is needed for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, or feeling very unwell. Even a painless lump should be assessed if it grows quickly, bleeds, changes its surface, or repeatedly returns.

Ask what makes removal suitable, whether the cyst is currently inflamed, and what happens if it is left alone. Discuss anaesthesia, wound closure, scar care, dressing changes, activity, recurrence concerns, and the exact symptoms that require follow-up.
