What should you know about epicondyle bursitis?

Short answer
Epicondyle bursitis is inflammation of a cushioning bursa near the elbow that can cause local swelling, tenderness, and pain with pressure or movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means
A bursa is a thin, fluid-filled sac that reduces rubbing between tissues. Around the elbow, repeated leaning, friction, a blow, or sustained pressure can irritate it. The area may look puffy and feel warm or sore. A clinician may examine the skin, elbow movement, and nearby joints; persistent or unusual swelling may need imaging or fluid testing to distinguish irritation from infection, gout, or another cause of joint swelling.
What you can do
Avoid leaning on the elbow and pause the activity that provokes pain. Cold packs wrapped in cloth may ease discomfort for short periods. Keep the elbow moving gently within a comfortable range, but do not force it or massage a visibly hot, swollen area. A clinician or pharmacist can advise whether an anti-inflammatory medication is suitable for you. If swelling persists, treatment may include a cortisone injection or joint aspiration; these require an assessment first.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical assessment if redness or warmth is spreading, the swelling is rapidly increasing, you have fever, drainage, marked pain, or you cannot move the elbow normally. Seek urgent care after a significant injury, or if the hand becomes numb, pale, or unusually cold. Infection in a bursa needs different treatment from simple irritation, so do not puncture or drain it yourself.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what may have irritated the bursa, whether infection needs checking, which movements to limit, and how long to try home care. You can also ask whether medication, aspiration, or an injection fits your medical history.

Questions people ask
Can epicondyle bursitis be caused by pressure?
Yes. Repeated leaning or friction can irritate the bursa near the elbow.
Should you drain elbow swelling at home?
No. Self-drainage can introduce infection and may delay diagnosis of another problem.
