What an enlarged lump on the neck may mean

A neck lump may be an enlarged lymph node responding to infection, a thyroid swelling, a cyst, or another non-cancerous change. Cancer can also present as a neck lump. Head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, and cancer of unknown primary are different possibilities with different investigations and treatments. The lump’s position, firmness, movement, growth, and relationship to recent infection help guide the assessment, but appearance alone cannot provide a diagnosis.

Arrange a clinical examination, especially when a lump persists, enlarges, feels hard or fixed, or has no clear infectious explanation. The clinician may examine the mouth, throat, thyroid, and lymph-node areas, then request ultrasound, imaging, blood tests, or a needle sample. Do not repeatedly squeeze the lump, and bring a list of symptoms and medicines. If the lump is related to the thyroid, thyroid removal surgery is one possible treatment, but only after the cause and extent are established.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow liquids, rapidly increasing swelling, or severe neck pain. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for persistent hoarseness, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, fever, or a lump that continues to enlarge. These signs do not identify a specific disease, but they make timely examination more important.

Ask which structure the lump may involve, what examination or scan is planned, whether a needle sample is needed, and when you should expect results. Ask which changes should lead you to seek urgent care while assessment is underway.
