What should you know about end warts?

Short answer

Warts may persist or return when virus-infected skin remains, but a clinician can confirm the diagnosis and discuss treatment or observation based on its location and symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why a wart may not end

A wart is a rough skin growth caused by a virus in the outer skin. It may stay unchanged, gradually shrink, or recur after treatment if affected tissue remains. Warts can spread through direct contact or shared damp surfaces, and picking can move the virus to nearby skin. A growth that bleeds without being injured, changes quickly, becomes unusually painful, or does not resemble a typical wart should be examined rather than repeatedly treated at home.

Treatment choices

Avoid cutting, burning, or sharing files and towels used on a wart. Covering it and washing hands after touching it can reduce spread. A dermatologist may recommend observation, Wart Removal, Cryotherapy (Lesion Removal), Electrosurgery, or selected topical treatment such as Imiquimod Treatment. Choice depends on the site, thickness, number of lesions, skin type, discomfort, and earlier treatment. Several appointments may be needed, and treated skin can be tender while it heals.

When to arrange an examination

Seek review for a wart on the face, genitals, or around a nail, or for a lesion that interferes with walking, work, or sleep. Arrange prompt assessment if it bleeds, ulcerates, changes colour or shape, grows quickly, or becomes persistently painful. People with reduced immunity, poor circulation, or diabetes should obtain professional advice before using home wart products.

Questions for your clinician

Are you certain this is a wart? Is observation reasonable at this site? Which treatment fits its thickness and my skin? How should I protect nearby skin, and what should healing look like? What happens if it returns?

Questions people ask

Why do warts come back after removal?

Residual affected tissue or nearby viral involvement can allow a wart to recur, so follow-up may be needed.

When should a suspected wart be checked?

A changing, bleeding, painful, unusual, or hard-to-treat growth deserves professional examination.
