What should you know about EMG gait analysis?

Small sensors placed over the skin detect electrical activity from working muscles. The assessment may compare activity on both sides while you stand, walk, change speed, or perform a task that reproduces your concern. The recording is interpreted alongside posture, joint movement, strength, balance, footwear, and symptoms. A muscle that activates early, late, for too long, or with reduced activity may help explain a limp, tiring leg, foot slap, or inefficient stride; it does not by itself name a diagnosis.

The assessment is different from a routine nerve test performed at rest. It focuses on muscle timing during movement, so comfortable clothing and your usual walking shoes can make the findings more useful.

Bring a list of symptoms, previous injuries, operations, medicines, and activities that are difficult. Tell the clinician about skin irritation, implanted electronic devices, or difficulty walking safely. During the assessment, follow the movement instructions and describe pain, weakness, fatigue, or altered sensation as they occur. Results may guide physiotherapy, exercise selection, footwear changes, or custom orthotics; they are one part of a treatment plan. Arrange prompt medical assessment for new or worsening weakness, repeated falls, loss of balance, or numbness that is spreading. Seek emergency help for sudden weakness on one side, new trouble speaking, severe loss of coordination, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These changes need clinical assessment rather than waiting for a gait study.
