What should you know about a normal electrocardiogram?

An ECG records heart rate, rhythm and the pattern of electrical signals during the test. A normal report is reassuring for the period captured, yet some rhythm changes are brief or occur only with exertion. The result also does not assess every structure, blood vessel or non-heart cause of chest discomfort, breathlessness or tiredness.

Your clinician considers why the ECG was requested and whether the recording matched your symptoms. Further assessment might involve an examination, blood tests, longer monitoring or another test, depending on the situation.

Read the report with the clinician who ordered it rather than relying on a label alone. Continue prescribed medicines unless instructed otherwise, and note when symptoms happen, what you were doing and whether they stop with rest. A symptom diary can help decide whether a longer recording is useful.

Get emergency help for sudden chest pressure, severe breathing difficulty, collapse, fainting or new weakness. These symptoms need prompt assessment even after a normal ECG. Contact a clinician soon if palpitations recur, exercise tolerance changes or dizziness continues.
