What should you know about electric burn scar?

Electrical injuries may leave scars that are darker, lighter, raised, tight, indented, or sensitive. The visible mark may not show the full extent of the original injury, because electrical current can damage deeper tissue and the entry or exit sites may be small. A clinician may ask how the injury happened, examine circulation and sensation, and check whether scar tightness affects an elbow, wrist, hand, or another joint.

Scar maturation is gradual. The final texture and colour can change over time, and treatment choice depends on whether the main problem is surface texture, firmness, contraction, pain, or loss of tissue.

Keep a healing wound clean and covered as instructed, and do not apply creams or silicone products until the surface has closed and a clinician confirms they are suitable. Once healed, moisturising and sun protection may make the scar more comfortable and less noticeable. Gentle movement or supervised therapy can help when tightness limits function; do not force a painful stretch.

For an established scar, options may include fractional laser treatment, scar revision surgery, or a skin graft when tissue is missing or movement is restricted. A specialist should match the option to the scar and the surrounding skin.

An electrical injury needs urgent medical assessment if it is recent, even when the skin mark looks small, because deeper injury, heart rhythm problems, burns, or muscle damage may not be obvious. Seek immediate help for chest pain, palpitations, fainting, breathing difficulty, weakness, confusion, severe pain, spreading redness, drainage, fever, or a wound that is becoming darker or swollen.
