What should you know about EKG ECG machines?

Small sticky electrodes placed on the chest and limbs detect electrical changes as the heart beats. Wires carry those signals to the machine, which displays and prints a tracing for a trained clinician to interpret. The recording can help assess an irregular rhythm, changes linked with reduced blood flow, or clues after symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness or chest discomfort.

An ECG is a snapshot. A normal tracing cannot explain every symptom, and an unusual tracing does not by itself name the cause. The result is considered with your history, examination and any other investigations.

Usually no special preparation is needed. Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and tell the clinician about medicines, implanted devices, skin reactions or difficulty lying flat. Remain still, breathe normally and avoid talking during the short recording so muscle movement does not interfere. The electrodes are removed afterward; mild skin irritation can occur.

An ECG appointment should not delay emergency help. Call emergency services for severe or persistent chest pain, major breathlessness, fainting, sudden weakness or a fast or irregular heartbeat with feeling unwell. After testing, seek advice for worsening symptoms or a significant reaction at an electrode site.
