Eczema on the Left Hand Only: What to Know

One-sided symptoms often prompt a closer look at what that hand touches or does differently. Possible triggers include cleaning products, gloves, tools, metals, repeated wet work or friction from a device. Atopic dermatitis can affect the hands, while contact dermatitis and fungal infection can look similar. The affected side alone does not identify the cause. Note when the rash began, which fingers or palm areas are involved, and whether the other hand or feet have scaling.

Rinse off suspected irritants and use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Keep a moisturiser beside the sink and apply it after washing, concentrating on knuckles, fingertips and the spaces around cracks. Wear protective gloves for wet or chemical tasks, with a soft cotton layer if sweating worsens the rash; remove them when the task ends. Do not apply a leftover prescription or a strong antiseptic without advice, because the wrong product can obscure the diagnosis or irritate broken skin.

Arrange a medical review if the rash does not settle, keeps returning to the same hand, spreads, or interferes with gripping. Prompt care is warranted for warmth, swelling, pus, rapidly increasing pain, red streaking or fever. A clinician may examine the nails and feet as well, and may recommend testing when a fungal infection or allergy is possible. Get advice before using steroid treatment on a rash that is sharply one-sided or worsening.

Ask whether contact allergy testing or a fungal test is appropriate, which work exposures to change, how to protect open cracks, and how long to try the recommended treatment.
