What should you know about ecoli mastitis?

E. coli is one bacterium that can contribute to mastitis. Bacteria may enter through irritated or cracked nipple skin, or become established when milk is not draining comfortably. The breast may feel tender, firm, hot, or have a wedge-shaped area of redness. Fever, chills, body aches, and feeling unwell suggest the inflammation is affecting the whole body. A painful breast does not by itself identify the specific bacterium, so examination and treatment advice matter.

Arrange a clinical assessment, particularly with fever or worsening redness. Continue breastfeeding or expressing if it is comfortable and your clinician advises it; milk removal does not usually harm the baby, but forcing deep massage or abruptly stopping can worsen swelling. Rest, drink to thirst, use a cool pack for comfort, and take only pain or fever medicine that is suitable for you. Antibiotics may be prescribed when bacterial infection is suspected. A lactation consultant can review latch, positioning, and breast emptying without painful pressure.

Get same-day advice for fever, rapidly spreading redness, increasing pain, pus, a new soft or fluctuant lump, or symptoms that are not improving with the agreed plan. Emergency care is appropriate for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, or inability to keep fluids down.
