The device turns tiny electrical signals into waveforms on a screen or printed page. A trained clinician reviews the tracing alongside your symptoms, examination, medicines, and medical history. The machine may flag a pattern, but an automated message is not a diagnosis. A normal-looking tracing also cannot explain every cause of chest discomfort, fainting, breathlessness, or palpitations.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest, wrists, and ankles, and tell the healthcare professional about medicines, implanted devices, skin sensitivities, or difficulty lying still. Rest quietly before and during the recording. Avoid talking, shivering, or moving unless you need help, because muscle activity can add interference. The electrodes are removed after the tracing; mild temporary skin redness can occur where adhesive touched.

Seek urgent medical help for chest pressure or pain that is severe, new, or persistent, especially with sweating, nausea, breathlessness, fainting, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back. An ECG appointment should not delay emergency assessment. Contact your clinician promptly if repeated palpitations, near-fainting, or worsening shortness of breath continues even after a previous ECG.

Ask which symptoms the ECG is intended to investigate, whether the tracing was technically clear, who will interpret it, and when you should receive the result. If symptoms come and go, ask whether a longer monitor or another test would capture them more usefully.
