What should you know about ECG machine leads?

An electrode is the adhesive sensor attached to your skin; a lead is the electrical view calculated from the signals detected by those sensors. Together, the views help a clinician examine rhythm, rate, and patterns that may suggest strain or reduced blood flow. A lead wire may connect a sensor to the machine, so the terms can sound interchangeable even though they describe different parts of the test.

The technician may clean the skin and gently remove hair where needed so the sensors adhere. Tell them if your skin is fragile or if an adhesive has caused a reaction before. Lie still, keep your muscles relaxed, and avoid speaking during the brief recording. If a sensor loosens, mention it rather than repositioning it yourself. Correct placement matters because a misplaced sensor can alter the appearance of the tracing.

Call emergency services for severe chest discomfort, trouble breathing, fainting, or symptoms of a possible heart emergency. The number of leads does not determine whether your symptoms are urgent. If you develop a rash, swelling, or persistent soreness after adhesive removal, contact a healthcare professional for advice.
