What should you know about ECG machine interpretation?

A clinician checks whether the heartbeat appears regular, how electrical signals travel through the heart, and whether the tracing contains patterns that need attention. Automated labels on a device can be helpful prompts, but they are not a substitute for professional review. Symptoms and medical history may change the meaning of a finding.

Ask when and how your result will be explained. Keep a note of symptoms such as fluttering, dizziness, chest discomfort, or breathlessness, including what you were doing when they occurred. Bring a current medicine list and mention previous ECG results if available; this can help with comparison.

Seek emergency care for ongoing chest pressure, severe difficulty breathing, fainting, or sudden neurological symptoms, whether or not an ECG has already been performed. A result described as normal does not overrule a concerning change in how you feel.

Ask which part of the tracing was unusual or reassuring, whether the finding could explain your symptoms, and if comparison with an older ECG is useful. Clarify whether you need repeat testing, a wearable monitor, imaging, or review by a heart specialist.
