What should you know about an ECG machine electrocardiograph?

The device turns electrical signals into a printed or digital tracing. A clinician can examine the heart rate, rhythm, and the timing of electrical signals as they move through the heart. The tracing is one part of an assessment; symptoms, examination findings, medical history, and other tests may also matter.

You usually lie still while a healthcare professional places adhesive electrodes on the chest and sometimes the limbs. Keep your muscles relaxed, breathe normally, and tell the clinician about medicines, implanted devices, or skin irritation. The recording itself is brief, and the electrodes are removed afterwards.

Seek urgent medical help for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, or sudden weakness, especially when symptoms are new or severe. Do not wait for a routine ECG appointment if you feel acutely unwell. An ECG may help assess symptoms, but it cannot replace urgent clinical care.

Ask why the ECG was requested, whether you need to prepare, when the tracing will be reviewed, and whether any further assessment is needed. If the result is described as abnormal, ask which finding was seen and what it means in relation to your symptoms.
